ARTIFICIAL BAIT BEST TODAY
10-7-2016--Went looking for fish because I have charters the next two days. Managed to buy a little fresh dead mullet and shad. Got no bites on cut bait probably because the water was too still and clear. After the third stop I decided to try drifting with artificial lures. One of the bait casters on the boat was rigged with soft plastic that someone had left on my rod so I threw it out. Ended up catching and releasing 4 keeper reds and 2 keeper trout before 9:30. Also, caught several small reds, trout and perch and the lure is still good. With the North wind starting tonight things will be all different tomorrow but at least I know two areas that had fish today.

DODGING STORMS
7-26-2016--Guests limited but the last fish took about an hour and the rain came down hard when we got about 400 yards from the dock. It was raining when we took the picture. All The guide friends that I've talked to had a tough day of catching today. Fishing was very slow.

HOT WEATHER FISHING
August
is when we go from windy and hot to very hot and wishing for wind. The fish and the bait they feed on, will
adjust to the changed conditions and so must the fisherman. Increased water temperatures mean fishermen
need to be where the fish want to be – in cooler and more oxygenated water,
moving water, whether tide or wind-driven.
More oxygen equals more fish.
Fish will be deeper and over softer, mud bottoms because the water there
will stay cooler. Early mornings, fish
may still move to shallow water since shallow water cools off more during the night,
but they won’t be far from deeper water and they won’t stay long after sun
up.
Piggy
perch will replace croaker as the favorite choice for August and September
trout. Piggy perch can be fished in
deeper mid-bay reefs, near gas wells, cuts and guts with moving water and
shorelines with deep water drop-offs.
Bait
fish will be leaving the back lakes due to increasing temperatures. Redfish will follow them and begin schooling
up on outside shorelines. Thus they will
be more accessible to everyone, not just those with air boats. Redfish will bite croaker, piggy perch,
shrimp, mullet and crab but we catch more of them on cut bait such as mullet,
skipjack and menhaden. Redfish will also
hit a wide assortment of lures in many different colors. I prefer wading for redfish with top water
lures or soft plastics. They seem to be
especially fond of scented soft plastics.
The
surf will be good fishing throughout August and September. If you are boating and the waves are down,
you can go out through the jetties and fish back near the shore in the first
three guts. Generally, the second bar
and gut out from the shore is most productive.
BUT –surf fishing from a boat is not for beginners. A good anchor is essential. In the surf you must monitor the weather
closely since summer storms can get between you and the way home.

CHRIS'S MARINE PULLS RABBIT OUT OF HAT
7-9-2016--Yesterday morning I thought I would be off the water for several weeks after my, out of warranty, motor trashed itself. I dropped the boat off at Chris's Marine and went to lunch. They called to tell me exactly what I expected "the motor is trash". I already had a motor on backorder for early August delivery. Another call from Chris's informed they could have me running with a new motor before close of business. I picked up the boat with new motor before 5 PM. In half a day Chris had solved my problem and insured I did not have to cancel today's clients.
Over the years I've come to expect timely, quality service at Chris's. Still, half a day for a new motor is nothing short of unbelievable.
GOOD READING
7-6-2016--My favorite outdoor magazine Texas Fish and Game has a good fishing article on page 84 of it's July issue written by Greg Berlocher. In the article he covers the ins and outs of how and when we use cut bait.

ANOTHER AWESOME DAY FISHING
7-1-2016--Had a family/friend group of seven using two boats today. All seven guests limited on trout and went on to catch four redfish.

AWESOME DAY
6-30-2016--Most of the trout in picture were caught on artificial lures. Many more limits of keeper trout were released. David caught all his trout on a Rapala Green Mullet. Nancy caught several trout on a voodu shrimp. We pulled up to one place where I baited Nancy with a croaker. When they threw out I tossed out a spook junior. All three of us hooked up with keeper trout. David had a trout on each of the green mullet hooks so we landed 4 fish at once. I'm generally impressed with a double hookup. Hooking 4 fish at once was a new one for me.
WADING THE UPPER LAGUNA
6-29-2016--Waded with one guest today. We caught and released several limits of trout. The guest kept the fish in the picture for dinner.

SURF TROUT
6-28-2016--Today's guests limited on 18-20 inch trout in 30 minutes. It took longer to get to the fishing location than it did to catch limits of fish. David caught all his limit on artificial lures. At first the top water got strikes every cast. As the sun started up the top water bite faded and he switched to a soft plastic.
DOWNPOUR
6-25-2016--today's guests caught 6 trout and missed twice that many early. We had to leave a good trout bite because of an approaching storm. Storm cells were on three sides of us leaving only one way to go. We ended up at Cove Harbor and the storm hit just after the guests got inside but before I could get tied up. After getting under cover I counted the seconds between lightening and thunder. The sound was coming between the count of 1 and 2. Another guide who arrived later said he saw lightening strike a sailboat at dry dock about 200 yards away from us. At that time his fishing rods were humming.
When we got back to fishing our trout bite had ended. Picture is of the Cove Harbor dock where 20 to 30 boats sought refuge.

DOUBLE CAUGHT
5-24-2016--Four guests caught 20 trout and 3 redfish. The biggest redfish swallowed two baits that were about 20 feet apart so it was caught by two fishermen.
