1-29-2010--Started the day looking for reds and drum with the idea that the trout would bite later when the water warmed up. No drum and no keeper reds so about 11 AM I switched to trout using soft plastics. Drifted a flat casting downwind. Trout were agressive. Ended up keeping 10 and released the rest. Only caught 2 undersized trout. Found the trout in 18 to 24 inches of water. When you go much deeper the trout get smaller. I was off yesterday but the day before my guest and I caught over 150 trout by my estimate. That day the water was much colder (52 degrees beginning the day) and there was almost no wind and little tide movement. We had fished until noon without putting a fish in the box, when we came across some reds and a large group of black drum. We anchored the boat and ate lunch in order to give the fish a chance to settle down before we got out to wade. Since we were using artificals it was not suprising that the drum did not bite and the reds that did were undersized except for one 31 incher and one slot red. The good news is we hit trout not 100 yards from the boat that were super agressive. A lot of the time we had 2 on at once. Most of the trout were just short of 15 inches but we managed to catch about thirty in the 15 to 17 inch range. My guest indicated it was the fastest most fun catching he had ever had. I love it when one can go just about any day and catch a nice stringer of trout.
