GO FIGURE

4-29-2012--Since only hardheads and perch would eat menhadden yesterday I didn't take any today.  My group did well on large live mullet but a boat that moved in next to us caught redfish even faster on cut menhadden.  Our fish averaged larger with two being oversized but I still wished we had some menhadden in addition to the mullet.  We dild not get a single bite on perch, cut perch or cut mullet.  The fish only wanted live mullet out of what we had to offer.

REDFISH ON MULLET

4-28-2012--Luckily we took several kinds of bait today.  Recently the redfish have wanted cut bait or perch.  Today we had cut skip jack, fresh menhadden and live mullet.  They wanted the live bait and generally ignored the cut bait.  It seems that every day is different. Tomorrow I'll take lots of live bait and hopefully the fish won't revert to cut bait.

4-26-2012.  High winds the past 2 days have made fishing with artificials very difficult.  Had three hardy fishermen who flew in to fish so postponing the trip was not an option.  They were new to coastal fishing but eager to learn.  We couldn't find enough fish to learn a lot, but I did do quite a bit of talking.  They wanted to do catch and release so we turned loose the few fish caught.  We did come across a shell or flat with two bunches of birds hovering over schools of redfish.  That made a good end to the second day.

TROUT ON CROAKER

4-24-2012--Today the trout finally started transitioning to croaker. We also had perch and shrimp which the trout wouldn't touch. They also seemed to ignore soft plastics today.

This time of year trout fishing is normally tough for a few days and this year is no exception. Trout especially larger ones have been tough to come by for the last 8-10 days. Thank goodness for redfish because they have been consistent. The water is coming back in after being pushed out by a series of Northers and high pressure so that should help the trout bite the next few days. Places to fish will be somewhat limited due to the forecasted high winds but I expect we'll be able to catch trout on hard sand and grassy shorelines.

REDFISH AND BIG TROUT

4-14-2012--The winds really howled today. The internet showed winds in the thirties but I know we had gusts at 40 MPH. My fishermen were a couple celebrating their fifth aniversity. She had not caught a redfish or trout before and he had only caught a small redfish. I guess she had beginners luck since she landed a 27 inch speckled trout and the largest redfish. They ended the day with 4 really good trout, three of which were over 22 inches and five redfish. We all thought there were 6 redfish in the box so we quit and went to the dock. Apparently, when the last trout was being brought in we thought it was a redfish so we agreed we had a limit and didn't adjust that thinking when the fish came to the net and was a 24 inch trout.

MORE WIND

4-13-2012--Winds were so stong today that very few places were left to wade for trout. My two fishermen gave up on wading for trout about noon. We moved to a spot on the flats and anchored up for redfish. Caught easy limits of redfish and released some.

HIGH WINDS MAKE TROUT FISHING TOUGH

4-12-2012--Waded for trout today with two very good fishermen but we couldn't seem to get the trout. Picked up their wifes at noon to go for redfish. That worked out much better. Thanks goodness for redfish. It seems that when the winds are too strong for trout the redfish go on a feeding frenzy.

NEW HAYNIE 24' CAT BOAT

4-5-2012--New boat is great. It's a lot like my last boat boat but with refinements. The folks at Chris's Marine have really got boat making and rigging down right. You'll be impressed when you ride in it. I've had a lot of boats but this has to be the best one yet.
